Ken Griffin campus plan sparks Miami CRE deal activity in Wynwood

Developers moved quickly after the announcement, including a Wynwood real estate firm marketing 17 nearby listings, while Carnegie Mellon aims to start enrolling students by 2028.

Commercial real estate professionals in Miami’s Wynwood region accelerated activity after news that billionaire Ken Griffin will invest $3B to bring a Carnegie Mellon University campus to the neighborhood, according to Bisnow.

Within hours, Wynwood-based Dwntwn Realty Advisors emailed out marketing for 17 nearby listings spanning development sites, and office and retail space within walking distance of the planned campus, and its managing partner said the firm’s website traffic surged and phone calls came in from multiple areas.

Carnegie Mellon University Miami expects to begin enrolling students in 2028, and Bisnow reports the prospect of a top national university arriving in the former industrial district has already triggered a broader CRE rush, including related planning by local developers.

Bisnow adds that Rilea Group, which is building two multifamily projects in Wynwood, scheduled a meeting to fly over to review opportunities, as competition for sites and space intensifies around the campus timeline.
