OpenAI says it disrupted a large-scale effort to copy hidden reasoning
The effort reportedly started July 1 and generated 16,000 extraction requests from more than 4,000 users over July 24 to 25, before OpenAI says it fully disrupted it by July 28.
OpenAI said it shut down a coordinated campaign aimed at copying how its AI models generate internal reasoning, rather than just the final answers.
The company said the activity began on July 1. It logged 16,000 extraction requests from more than 4,000 users during July 24 and 25, and it linked the broader effort to a cluster of over 15,000 users, before fully disrupting the activity by July 28.
OpenAI said it does not believe the operators broke its encryption, compromised a database, or gained direct access to stored user conversations. Instead, it said they manipulated model interactions to reproduce protected reasoning in a coordinated, scaled manner that violated its terms of service.
OpenAI also said it traced a core cluster of the activity to people associated with Moonshot AI, the Chinese startup behind the Kimi chatbot, according to Decrypt.
