CMLS speakers push for updated rules to govern MLS data use
Speakers said the MLS’s core asset is complete listing data, and that fragmentation can distort housing metrics and raise costs.
Speakers at the Council of MLS’ s Open House conference, covered by HousingWire, said MLS value hinges on complete listing data, warning that fragmentation can skew metrics and increase costs.
They argued that data will be monetized regardless of where industry participants stand on specific MLS debates, but said the key issue is governance, including protecting brokers’ rights.
CMLS and economist voices urged updated licensing structures and clearer rules for how AI systems can access MLS data and how that use should be monetized.
HousingWire reported that Realtors.com chief economist Danielle Hale said the MLS helps bring parties together and that a complete view of the housing market is important for pricing and for buyers making offers.
