Quantum fears for Bitcoin face skepticism

Bitcoin Magazine said there is no evidence a cryptographically relevant quantum computer will be built within a decade, leaving the threat as ongoing fear rather than a proven attack vector.

Bitcoin Magazine published a feature arguing that renewed fears about a cryptographically relevant quantum computer enabling attackers to derive secret keys from public keys are not supported by evidence. The outlet said the scenario would allow an attacker to sign Bitcoin transactions moving other people’s coins.

The article said there is no evidence that such a quantum computer will be built within a decade, and it is unknown whether one will ever be built. It characterized the quantum threat as a continuing form of fear, uncertainty, and doubt rather than a realistic, near term danger.
