Codelco suspends operations after worker dies at Radomiro Tomic mine
The fatality occurred around 8:50 a.m. local time during maintenance work, and the incident is the latest in a run of deadly accidents at major Chilean copper sites.
Codelco has suspended operations in the crushing and material handling area at its Radomiro Tomic copper mine in northern Chile following a fatal accident, Mining.com reports. The company said the worker died in an incident connected to a conveyor belt area near Calama.
Preliminary information cited by Chile’s disaster prevention service indicates the accident occurred at about 8:50 a.m. local time while a contractor was carrying out maintenance work. Senapred said no other emergencies were reported, and Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service was notified to inspect the site and take administrative measures.
The worker’s death adds to a series of fatal accidents at major Chilean copper operations in recent months, renewing attention on safety in the world’s largest copper producing country. Mining.com also notes a death on Sept. 26 at BHP’s Escondida mine, and a July 31 accident at Codelco’s El Teniente site that killed six workers and forced the miner to halt production.
