Second explosion hits Kent Nutrition Group feed mill in Iowa
No injuries were reported, and firefighters say product removal and hotspot watering took about three hours after the Oct. 1 blast.
World Grain reports a second explosion in 10 days struck a Kent Nutrition Group complex in northwest Iowa, at the company’s feed mill in Sheldon. The outlet said no injuries were reported and damage was contained to a cooler and product, according to the Sheldon Fire Co.
World Grain also said the prior explosion occurred on Sept. 21 at the same Sheldon, Iowa facility, damaging one of the feed mills, with no injuries reported. On Oct. 1, firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at about 12:30 a.m., and an initial inspection found no signs of damage or fire.
The fire department then allowed the building to sit awhile before two groups of firefighters entered at 1 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the cooler, World Grain reported. Once flames were controlled, Kent employees cut a hole in the bottom leg of the cooler, and a coordinated operation to remove product began and took about three hours as the product was brought outside and hotspots were watered down.
World Grain noted that Muscatine, Iowa-based Kent Nutrition Group is one of the largest feed manufacturers in the United States.
