Singapore targets fake online reviews, orders 45 firms to remove posts

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore said the first phase required affected companies to take down reviews and publish an apology for six months, after reviewing 45 companies involved in purchases.

Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCS) has taken its biggest action so far against fake online reviews, after finding that some firms bought review content that included artificial intelligence generated testimonials. The regulator said it targeted 45 companies, including a funeral parlour, a law firm, and an aesthetics clinic, after the provider’s services produced reviews resembling real customer experiences, according to SCMP Economy.

The CCS required the companies to remove the reviews and post a public apology for six months as part of the first phase of investigations. The outlet also reported that about 100 companies were involved in the broader review activity CCS examined.

Experts cited by SCMP Economy warned that generative AI could make fake reviews more widespread, as online review ecosystems continue to evolve.
