Spanish police arrest teen linked to KillSec ransomware group
Authorities say Europol secured at least 110 terabytes of stolen data and that prosecutors are tracing ransomware proceeds tied to crypto demands.
Spanish police arrested a 16-year-old suspected of running the KillSec ransomware group, as European law enforcement seized the group’s servers and leak site, Europol said.
Europol said the teen, a Romanian national detained in Alicante, is suspected of acting as the group’s administrator. Two other suspects in their twenties were arrested, one in Britain and one in Romania, while a fourth suspect was identified but not arrested.
The operation, part of Europol’s Operation KillSwitch, targeted around 1,000 suspected attacks worldwide, with about 500 identified as successful, according to the report. Investigators said eight properties were searched across Spain, Greece, Romania, and the UK, and they are tracing the proceeds of ransoms the group demanded in crypto.
According to the same coverage, a suspect held in Britain faces charges in the U.S., and a Dutch national resident in the UK was indicted by a federal grand jury in Puerto Rico on September 16 for conspiracy to access computers.
