Taiwan welcomes first two F-16Vs since latest US support signal
The jets arrived at Chihhang Air Base on Friday, part of a NT$247.2 billion sale for 66 F-16Vs approved by Washington in August 2019.
Taiwan hailed the delayed arrival of two F-16V fighter jets as a sign that US military support continues despite a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, according to SCMP Economy.
The two single-seat aircraft reached Chihhang Air Base in Taitung on Friday, described as the first new F-16s the island has received since it began taking deliveries of earlier F-16A/B fighters in 1997.
SCMP Economy reported that the F-16V configuration includes the Northrop Grumman APG-83 active electronically scanned array radar, updated avionics, and improved target detection and tracking capabilities.
The pair are part of a NT$247.2 billion (US$7.76 billion) sale of 66 F-16Vs that Washington approved in August 2019 during Trump’s first term.
