Glasgow council moves ahead with fire-and-rehire plan after union talks end
About 23,000 non-teaching council staff could be affected as the council issues fire-and-rehire letters after Unison declined to ballot members on an offer that would cut pay for 11% of employees.
Glasgow council workers are facing sacking and reappointment under less favorable terms after negotiations between the SNP-led council and unions ended again, according to the Guardian Business.
The plan would involve about 23,000 employees, covering all of the council’s non-teaching staff, after they were notified last week when talks between the council and unions including GMB, Unison, and Unite broke down.
The negotiations centered on a new pay and grading system meant to address historical pay equality issues, but Unison refused to ballot its members on an offer that would reduce pay for 11% of council employees.
After Unison declined the ballot, the council began issuing fire-and-rehire letters, pushing forward a process described as one of the UK’s biggest such exercises.
