Latvia’s United List leads election as Russia security threats loom

An exit poll from Latvia’s LTV public broadcaster gave the United List 35.6% of votes, with Kulbergs’ coalition backers totaling 51%.

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’ United List was leading an election on Saturday, according to an exit poll released by LTV public broadcaster, as security threats from Russia continue to rise.

The exit poll put the United List at 35.6% of the vote, and if confirmed, it would be the strongest result for any party in Latvian parliamentary elections since the country regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Kulbergs, 47, could also count on 51% of the vote if his United List combines with two current coalition allies, New Unity and the National Alliance, while early Sunday counts were expected to update the figures.

Kulbergs became prime minister at the end of May after the previous government fell, following a bungled response to drone incursions.
