US to deploy NMESIS on Yonaguni island during joint drills
The NMESIS deployment during Keen Sword places the system closer to Taiwan than the prior Resolute Dragon drills in September 2025.
The United States will deploy its ground-based uncrewed anti-ship missile system, the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS), on Yonaguni Island in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, according to the regional bureau of Japan’s defense ministry, via SCMP Economy.
The deployment is set to take place during biennial joint exercises this month, during the Keen Sword joint exercise.
SCMP Economy reports that the Keen Sword deployment moves NMESIS closer to Taiwan than during the Resolute Dragon joint drills in September last year.
During the earlier drills, NMESIS was stationed on Okinawa’s Ishigaki Island, about 127 km east of Yonaguni and roughly 240 km from Taiwan.
