Family visits lead Malaysians domestic travel purposes
In the second quarter, visits to relatives and friends accounted for 44.0% of domestic travel, up from 35.6% last year, according to Malaysia’s statistics data.
Malaysians are spending their domestic travel time primarily on visits to family and friends, with those trips making up 44.0% of domestic travel in the second quarter of this year, according to data from Malaysia’s Statistics Department, as reported by SCMP Economy.
The same figures show shopping as the purpose for 21.6% of domestic trips and holidaying for 13.0%, while family-related travel was also the top motivation last year at 35.6%.
SCMP Economy noted that the shift toward staying near relatives rather than at home creates opportunities for accommodation providers catering to visitors who plan their lodging around family locations.
