Foreign investors turn net sellers of Indian equities as outflows resume

September saw foreign portfolio investors sell ₹35,860 crore of Indian stocks, and outflows continued into October with another ₹18,513 crore withdrawn in two sessions.

Foreign portfolio investors have turned cautious on Indian stocks amid global headwinds, shifting back to net selling as surging bond yields, higher crude oil prices, and ongoing Middle East tensions prompt aggressive selling, according to LiveMint Markets.

In September, FPIs sold Indian equities worth ₹35,860 crore, and the selling continued into October, with foreign investors pulling out another ₹18,513 crore from equities in just two trading sessions, data from NSDL showed.

The outflows follow a period when FPIs invested ₹20,200 crore in Indian equities in July and ₹29,630 crore in August. With the September withdrawals, total FPI withdrawals from Indian equities in 2026 have reached ₹2.69 lakh crore, surpassing the ₹1.66 lakh crore outflow recorded during all of 2025.

The reversal in sentiment has weighed on market performance, with the Nifty closing each of the last eight weeks lower and widening its year to date losses to 14%. LiveMint Markets also noted the decline marks the Nifty 50's biggest weekly losing streak in 25 years.
