Global share of gasoline cars slips below 50% amid fuel price shock
The change is tied to the Hormuz shock and record-high fuel prices, which sped up the move toward EVs and hybrids outside China, where hybrids and EVs are about 55% of sales.
OilPrice reports that the share of gasoline cars in global vehicle sales fell below 50% for the first time, reflecting an acceleration in the shift toward EVs beyond China.
The outlet links the change to the Hormuz shock and record-high fuel prices, saying the price pressure helped overcome a previously sluggish transition outside China.
OilPrice notes that China had already surpassed the 50% threshold for hybrids and EVs, with that share now at about 55%, while other regions did not follow until the fuel-price shock.
The article attributes the broader timing shift to the Hormuz-related fuel spike, which it says drove the global drop in gasoline car sales share.
