ICC unseals arrest warrants for four Taliban leaders over gender persecution
The International Criminal Court on Monday unsealed arrest warrants for four senior Taliban leaders, accusing them of committing the crime against humanity of gender persecution against women, girls, and members of the LGBTQ community in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in 2021, according to a report from the Associated Press.
The ICC said the warrants had been issued in July and September of last year for Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, head of Afghanistan’s Supreme Court, the outlet reported.
Also named were Education Minister Habibullah Agha and Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadim, the report said.
The existence of the warrants against Akhundzada and Haqqani was disclosed last year, but they remained sealed until Monday, the Associated Press reported.
