India sells Akash air-defense missiles to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan

The Defence Ministry says the short-range system can engage aerial targets 100 meters to 20 km high and includes protection against electronic jamming.

India has sold its Akash short-range air-defence missile system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, establishing a presence in Central Asia as it aims to expand as a global arms exporter, according to SCMP Economy.

India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed the latest sales, describing the Akash as one of India’s “success stories,” and said the deal also signals interest from other countries, the outlet reported.

Developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Akash is designed to hit multiple targets at once and features built-in protection against electronic jamming, the report said.

SCMP Economy added that the Defence Ministry puts the engagement envelope at 100 meters to 20 km in altitude, with operational range from 4.5 km to 25 km, and that the missiles use command guidance to lock onto targets.
