Trump appoints national intelligence chief to lead new AI taskforce

The taskforce is set to coordinate US government engagement with consumers, companies, and religious organizations, as AI oversight debates intensify.

US President Donald Trump has named the director of national intelligence to head a new government taskforce focused on artificial intelligence, saying the group will coordinate government engagement with consumers, companies and religious organizations, according to BBC Business.

BBC Business reports the appointment, led by Jay Clayton, comes as the taskforce has drawn criticism from Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has called for regulation of AI.

The article also says Trump has rejected the idea of laws to control AI development, while noting a debate about AI risks and what the technology means for humanity.

In addition to Clayton, the taskforce will include Andrew Ferguson, head of the Federal Trade Commission, and Emil Michael, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, BBC Business reports.
