Scotland faces wave of planned hyperscale data centres amid AI boom
Plans include sites up to 60 hectares, with supporters citing major investment and jobs and opponents warning about energy use and local impacts.
Scotland is seeing a surge in planned data centres as artificial intelligence drives demand for large “hyperscale” facilities, according to BBC Business.
The outlet reports that at least 23 huge data centres are planned in Scotland, with some proposals described as among the biggest in the world and built to support AI systems.
Supporters of the projects say they are vital for the future and could bring billions of pounds in investment and thousands of jobs, while opponents raise concerns about the effects of their scale on local communities and the vast amounts of energy they consume.
BBC Business also notes that some hyperscale plans could be immense in size, with one site proposed to span 60 hectares, about the area of 84 football pitches, and critics say issues such as noise could also matter.
