Trump floated halting trade with deficit countries tied to Fed cuts

The proposal came alongside a claim that the US should rely on a high IQ president to provide AI guardrails, and a poll found only 7% of Americans back Trump to lead AI regulation.

Donald Trump made a claim on Truth Social that AI needs “guardrails” provided by a strong and smart president, and the comments were followed by other statements that sparked alarm among experts about potential damage to the US and world economy, The Guardian Economics reports.

One statement raised the possibility of cutting off trade, with Trump saying he would stop trading with countries that run deficits with the US if the Federal Reserve does not cut interest rates, according to The Guardian Economics.

The article says public confidence in Trump’s economic judgment has fallen sharply, citing a Wall Street Journal poll that found only 7% of Americans think he should take the lead in regulating AI, and it notes that an advocacy group called Republicans Against Trump criticized him as “Dumbest. President. Ever.”

The report adds that economists and corporate executives were especially concerned about the trade and rate-linked statements in particular.
