Chinese grandmother behind long-running coffee shop becomes social media hit

An 86-year-old woman in China, Zhao Qiying, has drawn social media attention for running a coffee shop in downtown Qingdao, in eastern China’s Shandong province, according to SCMP Economy.

Zhao took over the business from her son in 2015 even though she had no coffee experience, and she later said the shop had been nearly bankrupt due to her son’s lack of business acumen.

She initially was reluctant, after her son suggested she focus on basic duties since few customers were coming, but she later decided to learn coffee making.

SCMP Economy reports that she taught herself using coffee-making books and tips from her son, after no institution would accept her as a student because of her age.
