UK experts warn government lacks a plan for food crisis

An open letter from more than 150 experts cites threats to the UK food supply chain including climate shocks, cyber attacks, and energy outages.

Academics, business leaders, community groups, and food partnerships are urging the UK government to treat food as a national security issue, arguing the country lacks a plan to feed people during a crisis.

According to an open letter delivered to Andy Burnham, the warning says Britain is unprepared for potential future food shortages and describes the government as “complacent about food as a national security matter.”

The letter highlights risks to food chain security including the climate crisis, geopolitical shocks, cyber attacks, and energy outages, and calls for steps to make the UK food system more resilient.

The Guardian Business reports that the push includes efforts to strengthen the food supply in an era of increasing disruptions.
