The technology can also recover uranium and bromine from seawater, with electricity use efficiency improved by about 15.0%.

Chinese scientists have built a small, stable co-production plant that uses one system to extract hydrogen and fresh water from seawater, according to a paper in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Energy, as summarized by SCMP Economy.

The researchers, led by Deng Dehui and Liu Yanting from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, also reported recovering uranium and bromine as part of the process.

SCMP Economy reports the team improved on an existing approach that was described as costly and power hungry, by raising electricity use efficiency by about 15.0%.
