Zurich warns life sciences risks are outpacing insurance coverage

In its report, Zurich says renewal risks are emerging as coverage designed for physical products and short transactions struggles with software, AI-linked care decisions, and longer outcome-based obligations.

Zurich Insurance Group flagged a widening gap between faster life sciences innovation and insurance systems meant to price, prove, manufacture, finance, and deliver those therapies, according to a new report titled Beyond 2030: The Future of Life Sciences.

The report draws on interviews with 34 life sciences experts and a survey of 62 specialists, arguing that the most consequential risks are increasingly shifting from the laboratory to what happens afterwards.

Zurich said accountability and product liability frameworks may struggle as insurers face connected devices, AI-embedded clinical decisions, and outcome-based contracts that can extend years beyond the initial sale.

The firm pointed to the EU’s revised Product Liability Directive, which took effect in December 2024 and starts applying from December 2026, as a regulatory signal of how that shift is progressing.
