Balyasny promotes Ilan Weiss to co-head of global equities
The promotion comes as the firm’s global equities strategy has stayed profitable, while its fixed-income and macro businesses have posted losses this year.
Balyasny Asset Management promoted portfolio manager Ilan Weiss to global co-head of equities, elevating him from a stock-picking role to help oversee the firm’s largest investment strategy, according to a Bloomberg report cited by Hedgeweek.
Hedgeweek said a memo sent to employees on Monday assigns Weiss to run the equities business alongside founder Dmitry Balyasny, and that the firm credited Weiss’s team with generating the highest profits among its equity teams since he became a portfolio manager.
The report also noted that Balyasny’s equities strategy has remained profitable this year, providing a key source of gains for the $37 billion multi-strategy firm as other parts of the portfolio have struggled.
Hedgeweek said fixed-income and macro businesses recorded losses in 2024, leaving the firm with a return of 0.7% through September, based on a person familiar with the results.
