EU launches €35 million tender to detect solar radiation modification

The call, funded through Horizon Europe, targets research and coordination on monitoring potential efforts to block out the sun as climate risks rise.

The European Union has launched a €35 million (US$39.4 million) tender to fund research and coordination efforts related to Solar Radiation Modification, including ways to detect potential rogue attempts to alter the Earth’s atmosphere by blocking out the sun, according to SCMP Economy.

The EU said the initiative is an early stage effort to coordinate action around the nascent and controversial technology, which could be used to cool the planet if temperatures approach critical tipping points.

SCMP Economy also noted that a UN report warned last month that global temperatures are on track to cross 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels within the next few years, and could reach as high as 2.6 degrees without changes to current policies.
