Fraudster sentenced for fake home insurance claims about stolen Lego
The ABI said fraudulent insurance claims totaled £1.34bn in 2025, up 14% from £1.18bn the year before.
A scammer sentenced to 28 months in prison over fabricated home insurance claims involving supposedly stolen Lego has been listed by the UK insurance trade body ABI as one of last year's most high-profile insurance fraudsters, BBC Business reports.
According to the ABI, investigators found the Lego theft claims were made up, and highlighted other fraud cases including staged car crashes involving people met online and a complex travel insurance scam using multiple fake identities and documents.
The ABI reported that the average value of a fraudulent claim rose to £14,300 last year, the second-highest level on record.
It also said there were £1.34bn worth of fraudulent claims detected in 2025, a 14% increase from £1.18bn detected the previous year, while the number of detected fraudulent claims fell slightly to 93,900, down 2.7% year on year.
