Google ordered to halt Finland data centre work over missing EIAs

The stop-work order covers sites in Muhos and Kajaani tied to a €13bn project across northern Finland.

A Finnish authority has ordered Google to temporarily stop work on two data centre construction sites after the company failed to complete required environmental impact assessments, according to the Guardian Business.

The order relates to planned data centres in Muhos and Kajaani as part of a wider €13bn project across multiple sites in northern Finland amid demand for space for online infrastructure.

Tuike Finland Oy, the company representing Google, reportedly felled 330 hectares of forest in Muhos without completing an EIA, and logging has also reportedly taken place in Kajaani across just under 200 hectares.

The Guardian Business reports that the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation said the sites have been reduced to “sand,” blaming the oversights on Google’s approach.
