Mainland research institutes draft scenarios for post-reunification Taiwan

In 2019, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for detailed proposals on how Taiwan could be governed after reunification, and South China Morning Post reports that initial drafts from mainland research institutes are now either finalized or near completion.

Rather than outlining a single fixed model, scholars involved in the studies said the proposals should cover different scenarios depending on how reunification occurs.

The report says peaceful reunification would grant Taiwan the widest scope of autonomy under Beijing’s “one country, two systems” framework for post-reunification governance.

South China Morning Post also cites a Taiwan affairs professor at Xiamen University, Chen Xiancai, who said earlier engagement by Taiwan in talks would increase Taiwan’s bargaining power and the space it would have to shape the terms.
