Russia’s digital ruble tops 220K accounts in first month

The Russian central bank expected about 60,000 accounts after the digital ruble launched on Sept. 1, Reuters reported.

Russia’s central bank digital currency, the digital ruble, has opened more than 220,000 accounts in its first month, far exceeding official expectations, according to Cointelegraph citing Reuters.

Russian central bank Deputy Governor Zulfiya Kakhrumanova said the figure was nearly 4 times the roughly 60,000 accounts officials expected after the CBDC launched on Sept. 1.

Cointelegraph adds that the early uptake is happening as BRICS nations, including Russia, China and India, explore linking digital currencies for cross-border trade and payments.
