Asda or Morrisons could disappear as UK supermarket consolidation talk returns
Sainsbury’s and Morrisons held merger talks between November and February, before the larger player walked away, according to the report.
The Guardian Business reports that industry watchers think either Asda or Morrisons, or both, could disappear within a decade as the UK supermarket sector faces renewed consolidation speculation.
The outlet says Sainsbury’s and Morrisons held merger talks between last November and February, and that Sainsbury’s later decided to walk away from the potential deal.
It also reports that Sainsbury’s is seen as at least willing to consider buying one of its troubled rivals, with the retailer’s boss Simon Roberts described as having been in post for six years.
The report adds that Sainsbury’s has 600 supermarkets and almost 900 convenience stores, and that its earlier effort to buy Asda for 7 billion pounds in 2019 was blocked.
