London Stock Exchange chief urges more incentives to keep firms in the UK
Dame Julia Hoggett said the LSE’s main market includes about 930 companies with total value near £4.9 trillion, but many large firms have delisted or shifted abroad.
London Stock Exchange boss Dame Julia Hoggett told the BBC that the UK needs to make investing in its stock market more attractive as more large firms choose to list overseas. She said the government should create “structural incentives” to encourage businesses to back the UK rather than look abroad for the next stage of growth, according to BBC Business.
Hoggett warned that the continued move away from London could weaken the UK economy by reducing tax revenues and depressing business valuations. She pointed to recent years in which scores of big firms have left the London market, considered switching venues, or been bought by private foreign investors.
She said the LSE’s main market is made up of around 930 companies with a total market value of about £4.9 trillion. She also cited examples of firms that have delisted or moved away from the exchange, including takeaway chain Just Eat, which joined elsewhere.
