Carlsberg Britvic proposes closing Marston's Brewery site in Burton next summer
The company said UK cask ale volumes have more than halved in less than a decade, and priority brands including Hobgoblin, McEwan's and Brooklyn are expected to remain in its portfolio.
Carlsberg Britvic has proposed shutting the Marston's Brewery facility in Burton-upon-Trent along with its primary logistics operation, with the plan targeted for next summer, according to BBC Business. The brewer told colleagues and trade union partners earlier on Thursday.
BBC Business reports that the company linked the move to long-running industry decline, saying UK cask ale volumes have more than halved in less than a decade and that the trend is expected to continue across the UK.
Carlsberg Britvic said its priority brands, including Hobgoblin, McEwan's and Brooklyn, are expected to remain in its portfolio, though it was unclear where they will be brewed.
The outlet also noted Burton's deep brewing heritage, with connections dating back centuries, and quoted CEO Paul Davies saying the proposal was by no means a reflection on company people and that efforts would be made to help employees through the period.
