Chinese navy says foreign warship lost power during shadowing in SCS
The incident, involving the PLA Navy Type 055 destroyer Zunyi, lasted nearly half an hour, with the follower’s radar stopping and navigation lights going dark, according to CCTV.
China’s navy said a rare South China Sea encounter involved a foreign warship that, while following a People’s Liberation Army destroyer during routine training, lost power, propulsion, and radar, the state broadcaster CCTV reported Wednesday.
The report said the incident occurred when a foreign vessel conducted aggressive close shadowing of the PLA Navy Type 055 destroyer Zunyi, but CCTV did not identify the foreign warship or give the date or exact location.
According to an officer aboard Zunyi, Zhang Jun, the Chinese ship accelerated in high-speed cruise to force the follower to keep pace.
Zhang said that during the stand-off, power and electricity on the follower went out, radar stopped transmitting, and navigation lights went dark for nearly half an hour, while Zunyi continued operating normally.
