Disruptions put 5.2% of Chile copper output at risk

A new GEM Mining Consulting index assessed 14 major mines and found risks ranging from 2.6% to 9%, with El Teniente topping the list at 9%.

Mining.com reports that strikes, severe weather, accidents, and geological problems put an average 5.2% of production at risk across Chile’s largest copper mines, based on a new assessment.

The Production-at-Risk Index from GEM Mining Consulting scored 14 major copper operations across eight threat categories, with risk estimates ranging from 2.6% to 9%. Almost one in 10 tonnes was described as vulnerable at the country’s most exposed operation.

El Teniente ranked highest at 9%, followed by Los Pelambres at 8% and Escondida at 7.5%. Nine operations were said to carry at least one risk rated high.

The study also points to recent disruptions in Chile, including an indefinite strike at Antofagasta’s Centinela, the shutdown of BHP’s Escondida after a fatal accident, storm impacts at Los Pelambres and Caserones, and the suspension of Codelco’s Andes Norte project at El Teniente due to deep seismic risks.
