EU negotiators head to China for talks on hybrid car imports

The two days of “crunch” talks led by EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič target a pilot approach aimed at reducing Chinese exports of cheap hybrid electric cars to Europe ahead of an EU leaders meeting in Brussels.

EU trade negotiators are traveling to China for two days of late-stage talks aimed at reaching a breakthrough deal on trade, as EU member states have hardened demands to address protection concerns.

HousingWire reports the discussions, led by trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, are scheduled to run starting Wednesday, continuing late into Friday, with hopes for tangible, meaningful, and measurable results before EU leaders meet in Brussels next Thursday, when China is expected to be high on the agenda.

The main focus is described as a “proof of concept” pilot agreement covering one sector, centered on curbing Chinese exports of cheap hybrid electric cars into Europe as a way to tackle Beijing’s record £1bn-a-day trade surplus.
