German president Steinmeier to visit China as trade ties sour

The trip will be his first official visit to China since 2018 and is timed alongside Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s travel to Japan and South Korea before October ends.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is planning a visit to China in the coming weeks, even as relations between Beijing and Berlin deteriorate over trade, according to multiple sources familiar with the arrangement, as reported by SCMP Economy.

The trip will be Steinmeier’s first official visit to China since 2018, and it will come as his decade-long presidency winds down ahead of its end in March 2027.

SCMP Economy reported that the visit will coincide with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trips to Japan and South Korea before the end of October, reflecting the German government’s diplomatic calendar amid tougher trade dynamics.
