Gunman kills one official, injures another during firearms inspection in Bavaria

A local government employee was shot dead and another was seriously injured during a routine firearms inspection in southern Germany on Thursday, police said, involving employees of the Neumarkt district administration.

The inspection in the town of Berngau in Bavaria targeted a gun owner, after which the man opened fire and then barricaded himself inside a residential building.

Authorities mounted a major police operation that included surrounding the building, calling in special forces and a heavily armed tactical unit with an armored vehicle.

Police helicopters were also deployed, according to the report.
