Hong Kong police arrest 2 students in alleged HK$2.1m fraud syndicate
The arrests follow a first operation that nabbed 10 suspects, and police allege the group used fake job ads, dating scams, and bogus concert ticket sales to steal more than HK$2.1 million.
Hong Kong police arrested two students they suspect are core members of a fraud and money-laundering syndicate tied to alleged scams involving fake job advertisements, dating fraud, and bogus concert ticket sales, according to SCMP Economy.
Police said the investigation also led to an earlier operation in which they arrested 10 people, with the syndicate allegedly swindling victims out of more than HK$2.1 million, or US$267,578.
In total, police said they arrested 10 suspects, consisting of five males and five females aged between 13 and 68, and charged them on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering.
SCMP Economy reported that one suspected core member is a male student and the other is a female student studying at different tertiary institutions, and police said they are a couple.
