Hong Kong police recover HK$30 million gold swapped for fabric softener

Police said the scheme involved replacing 30kg of gold granules with eight bottles of fabric softener in a Kwun Tong hotel room.

Hong Kong police said they recovered about HK$30 million worth of stolen gold after an elaborate hotel-room swap, in which 30kg of gold granules were replaced with eight bottles of fabric softener.

According to SCMP Economy, the force received a report early on Wednesday from a mainland Chinese man who suspected his gold had been stolen from his luggage at a Kwun Tong hotel, and said a friend in the same room later disappeared.

Police said they traced the suspects using the city’s surveillance camera network and arrested two men in connection with the case, adding that they identified all three men involved.
