Nifty falls to 18-month low as rate fears deepen
The Nifty 50 closed at 22,231.8 on Oct. 8, down 1.6%, after a central bank rate decision and amid foreign selling in index heavyweights.
India's Nifty 50 fell to an 18-month low on Oct. 8, closing 1.6% lower at 22,231.8, its lowest closing level since April 7, 2025, after a broad selloff.
The benchmark traded down further in the session, with an intraday low of 22,179, marginally below its prior 52-week low of 22,182, as concerns mounted about continued market losses.
The Sensex 30 also declined, ending 1.4% lower at 71,593.2, its lowest level since Feb. 13, 2024, according to LiveMint Markets, with foreign portfolio investors selling in index heavyweights.
The article linked the market slide to rising oil prices that could keep inflation elevated, prompting the possibility of additional rate hikes, and noted bulk selling including GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity selling ₹1,839 crore in ITC and Goldman Sachs Trust II Goldman Sachs GQG Partners Intl Opportunities Fund selling ₹6,831 crore.
