Pound rises as Waller comments weigh on the US dollar
GBP/USD was last around 1.3230 after a low near 1.3184, with Fed October hike odds priced at 18% in money markets.
The British pound gained about 0.14% on Thursday, while the US dollar slipped, as Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller’s comments weighed on the Greenback, FXStreet reported.
FXStreet said GBP/USD was trading near 1.3230 after bottoming at 1.3184, even as the US labor market showed strength.
According to the outlet, the US Department of Labor reported initial jobless claims for the week ending October 3 at 197K, below the 200K forecast, and down from the prior week’s upward revised 199K.
FXStreet added that Waller suggested rate hikes do not need to occur at consecutive meetings, with money markets pricing out an October hike at about 18% odds, and December odds at 87%, citing Prime Terminal.
