UK retailers warn green levies will push electricity prices higher

The British Retail Consortium says power bill policy costs will rise this year, with retailers warning electricity costs could increase by £440 million.

UK retailers are urging the UK government to cut so-called green policy costs added to energy bills, warning the charges will flow through to higher prices for shoppers, according to OilPrice.

The British Retail Consortium, which represents major chains including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Marks & Spencer, said rising “policy costs” tied to energy bills are likely to lift retail prices.

Retailers also warned that electricity costs are set to soar by £440 million this year, arguing Chancellor John Healey must act to reduce the burden on consumers.

The push highlights growing pressure on UK energy pricing as companies look to contain costs faced by households through policy charges.
