UK MoD objects to planned windfarm over radar interference fears
The MoD warned that a Durham wind project could interfere with aircraft detection in an RAF low flying area.
The UK Ministry of Defence has objected to at least four planned windfarms in the past year, citing fears that turbine blades could cause unacceptable interference with radar used to detect military aircraft, the Guardian Business reports.
MoD officials raised concerns in late June over an onshore windfarm proposal in County Durham, warning it could result in aircraft not being detected within an RAF Low Flying Area, according to a letter to Britain’s planning authority.
The objection is understood to relate to the Hope Moor project, which could build 23 turbines to heights of 200m.
The Guardian Business reports the latest complaint could also put the MoD on a collision course with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, given broader energy policy aims.
