US ends Iraq military mission, switching to Iraqi-led security effort
The campaign that began in 2014 to fight Islamic State has been replaced by an Iraqi-led security effort, with the US continuing targeted training and intelligence support.
The US has formally ended its military mission in Iraq, a move analysts say could give Baghdad more flexibility to pursue a broader range of partnerships, which may indirectly support China’s energy and commercial interests, according to SCMP Economy.
Analysts quoted by SCMP Economy cautioned, however, that the change is unlikely to leave a security vacuum for Beijing to step into, citing China’s limited ambition and capacity to take on the US security role.
SCMP Economy reports the mission, launched in 2014 to fight Islamic State, has been replaced by an Iraqi-led security effort, while Washington says it will keep providing targeted training and intelligence support.
