French finance minister urges UK to rejoin EU fully
Roland Lescure said EU membership helps countries better tackle global challenges, while arguing UK industry could face disruption from the bloc’s “Made In Europe” plan.
French finance minister Roland Lescure invited Britain to “come all the way” back to the European Union, after UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested a second Brexit referendum could be possible in a future Labour election manifesto, the BBC reports.
Lescure told the BBC that while EU membership brings difficulties, being in the bloc allows members to better address challenges facing the world. Burnham previously said the UK should consider options including staying as is, rejoining the customs union or single market, or leaving “all the way.”
Burnham warned that planned EU rules to support European manufacturers could harm the UK, citing concerns over how British industry and supply chains may be affected by the EU’s “Made In Europe” scheme.
The BBC reports that the proposals aim to protect EU industry from Chinese competitors by giving companies inside the bloc priority for public contracts and subsidies, and the EU car industry has called for the UK to be included to avoid disruption to supply chains.
