US Taiwan policy increasingly tied to Beijing, ex-officials warn

Former US officials also cautioned that the war in Iran is weakening US military readiness for a potential Taiwan Strait conflict.

Former US officials warned in Washington that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan is increasingly linked to its relationship with Beijing, during a fireside chat at an annual symposium hosted by the Global Taiwan Institute, the SCMP Economy reports.

Brent Christensen, a former director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, said the US-Taiwan security relationship remains robust, but he pointed to a sharp rise in US demands for burden sharing, including Taiwan doing more of its own weapon systems production and increasing defense spending.

Christensen also said there has been a big increase in US demands related to Taiwan’s high-tech investment in the United States, while warning that the war in Iran is weakening US military readiness for a potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
