China accelerates learning from drone tactics used in Ukraine

A CSIS analysis says China’s military and defense-industry analysts often publish new drone battlefield techniques in about four months, faster than the roughly year-long lag previously seen in PLA public training and equipment.

China is pursuing a systematic effort to learn from the drone war in Ukraine, with a new analysis saying military and defense-industry analysts typically document battlefield techniques within about four months, according to commentary published by the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on October 7.

The analysis also says China has historically taken a year or more before those lessons became visible publicly in People’s Liberation Army training, equipment, or force structure.

It adds that the takeaways extend beyond immediate tactics, including work on the economics of mass-produced drones, ways to shorten the kill chain, fiber-optic FPV drones that are harder to jam, and multiple layers of defense against sea and aerial drones, as described by Lilly Min-Chen Lee and Kateryna Bondar.
