Hong Kong’s recycled gutter oil becomes prized feedstock for SAF
EcoCeres says gutter oil has shifted from being collected at little or no cost about 10 years ago to costing more per unit than fuel today.
South China Morning Post reports that China’s once-notorious “gutter oil”, recycled from kitchen and drainage waste, has largely disappeared from dining tables and has instead become a sought-after feedstock for clean energy production, particularly sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The outlet says Hong Kong-based biofuel producer EcoCeres sources gutter oil across the Greater Bay Area, following the material’s evolution from a food safety concern into a traded commodity.
SCMP reports that EcoCeres co-chairman Alan Chan Ying-lung recalled that gutter oil was essentially free about 10 years ago, when authorities also offered subsidies to collectors.
He added that the unit cost has risen, now said to be more expensive than fuel, highlighting the increasing value and demand tied to SAF production.
