Hong Kong police arrest 127 in Vietnamese-led loan-sharking probe

Hong Kong police said they arrested 127 people in a six-month undercover operation targeting a Vietnamese-led crime syndicate accused of running loan-sharking rackets.

The operation alleges the group charged interest rates of up to 3,700 per cent and also ran illegal gambling and unlicensed bars in West Kowloon, with raids carried out on Oct. 8 and 9.

Police said the syndicate was also accused of helping illegal immigrants find shelter and work, and that eight premises were raided during the actions.

Among those arrested were 10 alleged core members, including a suspected leader, a Vietnamese woman holding a Hong Kong identity card, according to SCMP Economy.
